penny ND VF T.F. Merry & Co. General Merchant Toowoomba. rev: Peace & Plenty above coat of arms. Tn167.1. scarce token. $350
threepence ND MS-65 Brown Australian WWII POW and Internment Camps threepence token. In April 1941, the Australian Military Board ordered the closure of all civilian-owned canteens operating in Internee and POW camps. Before then, the internees had used a bank account in nearby towns to pay for supplies from local civilian outlets. On April 16, 1941, authorities ordered that future purchases were to be made through the Defence Department Canteen Board and not from outside sources. In September 1941, Internment Camp tokens were issued in one penny, threepence, one shilling, two shillings, and five shillings denominations. They were to be used exclusively within the compound and be of no practical help in the event of an escape. Normal Australian coins were prohibited within the camp. Two Victorian firms were commissioned to strike the tokens. R. Arendeen and Sons of Malvern issued the One Penny as well as the Two and Five Shillings pieces. K.G. Luke and Company of Fitzroy produced the Shilling and Threepence. Careful scrutiny will show that the die-work from Luke and Company shows a sharper design. This company had its problems with die work however. On some of the Threepence issues the word "CAMP" appears instead of "CAMPS." Later issues were produced including the hole being punched off-centre or missing altogether. All are now highly sought after by collectors. Immediately after the war the tokens were called in and melted as their production, strictly speaking, contravened The Commonwealth Coinage Act. A small number escaped this fate as they were souvenired by prisoners, camp administrators and guards. A beautiful and rare token. $300

I have thousands of world coins. I have tended to only buy coins with eye appeal, rather than coins that have ugly designs or are completely worn out or damaged. Since I have thousands of foreign coins for sale, I only have room for a small number of them for sale on-line. If you want to buy coins you don't see on my web site, let me know. I just might have them for sale.
