State Religion and Law: 715 BC). Numa Pompilius was the second of
the seven kings who, according to Roman tradition, ruled Rome before
the founding of the Republic. He succeeded Romulus and is said to
have formulated the religious calendar and founded Rome's early religious

DES CENSEURS A.R. 310. (Creation of the censors: 44BC). Cato Censorinus
was a Roman statesman, orator and the first Latin prose writer of
importance. He fought in the Second Punic War and was later elected

Regulus.

surrounded by senators and Praetors. Exergue: VERTU DE REGULUS. A.R.
502. (Virtue of Regulus: 252 BC). A Roman general and statesman, Regulus
served as consul in 267 and 256 BC. During the first Punic War, he
and Lucius Manlius Vulso defeated the Carthaginian fleet and landed
an army in Africa. Vulso was then recalled, leaving Regulus to finish
the war. Regulus defeated the enemy at Adys, near Carthage. bronze.

Roman general to successfully encounter Hannibal during the Second

66 BC). Statesman, lawyer, scholar and writer who vainly tried to
uphold republican principles in the final civil wars that destroyed
the Republic of Rome. He is remembered in modern times as the greatest
Roman orator and innovator of what became known as Ciceronian rhetoric.

A.R. 708. (death of Cato: 46 BC). Leader of the Optimates who tried
to preserve the Republic against power seekers, particularly Julius
Caesar. He committed suicide after his adherents were evacuated after
